About the author and why Nursing?
My name is Sherrylyn V-V. That’s right V-V you’re not having diplopia or double
vision, I will explain to you why as you read my story. We are four siblings in
the family, three of us are Registered Nurses and one is a student nurse. My
late father was a dialysis patient for quite some time so he’s usually in the
hospital. My mother is a caregiver (until now) when she came to Canada. (now you
know how much we are involve in the health care system!).
I finished my Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Universidad de Sta. Isabel
formerly known as
Colegio de Sta. Isabel. In April 1868 it became the first normal school for
women in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. My clinical instructors, my first
hospital exposure and my supportive circle of friends are some of the highlights
of my nursing student life.

Fallback or a Blessing in Disguise
My biggest passion is
Nursing. Caring and making a difference to other people’s life gives meaning and
fulfillment to my life.
“In
this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great
love” by Mother Teresa.
Three
months after I passed my Philippine board exam I came back to Canada. I was so
sad because I left my best friends and the man I love. He was one of my
inspirations when I was taking my board exam.
A couple of months later, I was so excited to e-mail him and to inform him that
I passed my English exam!(and next will be a Canadian board exam). The man that
I love informed me - through email! -that he had been back together with his ex girl
“friend” for a while.
Whew!
I let out a heavy sigh, looked at things objectively and refocused to present
battles (my upcoming board exam, my transition from student nurse to a
professional and my adjustments to the foreign culture). ”What happens to
us, happens for us” – we are not meant to be after all.
It was indeed a blessing in disguise!
After I
passed my Canadian board exam I started looking for a nursing job in Vancouver.
As a Registered Nurse my managers expected a lot from me. I can’t blame them it
was written in my credentials – Registered Nurse (But I was a fresh graduate!).
Finally
I
landed my first nursing job, I was discouraged when one of the staff said to me,
“How come you are here?” I started having nightmares of IV pumps, staff wearing
white gowns, advanced gadgets which I never knew that exists and haven’t used in
nursing practice (we do everything manually back home!). After several days I
was informed by my manager saying, “You have a good attitude sherrylyn, but you
can’t do your job” she pointed out to me that I am working in one of the most
hectic medical unit in North America.
New Page 5I met the angel of my life and he invited me to Calgary, he said “in Calgary employers will beg for you, that’s how much they need nurses there”. After saying goodbyes to my family I moved to Calgary and started my nursing career in a nursing home. After I adjusted my nursing skills and improved my interpersonal skills I decided to work in the hospital to gain more experience. A leap of faith... It was a different set of challenges. Time management and setting priorities are a must. At first it was okay, but the time came that I needed to handle my own patients. I was so nervous to remember what I learned. Language barrier made it even more difficult to express and thoughts of inferiority came across my mind. I was painfully shy to ask for help thinking that they will report me to my manager. A senior nurse that gave me orientation sarcastically encouraged me by saying, “You’re very incompetent!” Even our nurse educator almost gave up on me. Until finally I started to relax - thanks to my mom -who is a woman of strength, with lots of prayers, several encouragements from my angel, and having reviewed several manuals I eventually gained confidence. At the age of 22, I was teaching my patients about heart complications and preparations to surgeries and procedures. My intravenous (IV) insertion skill improved significantly that other staff request for my help.
After almost a year in the medical cardiology, I’ve been giving orientations to students on different universities of all levels. And after almost 2 years I was asked by my manager to attend a charge nurse workshop.
Later on, I moved to a medical unit (Rockyview Hospital - Unit 74) to learn more, have a solid foundation and it turned out to be an absolute blessing! My managers are extra supportive and extra considerate. They go extra mile for their staff.
My love for nursing and the experiences I gained gave delight to my managers and they asked me to take on charge nurse position. I was chosen to attend a preceptor workshop to guide a fourth year student (from University of Calgary) for more than3 months before she can graduate fourth year level. My charge nurse know-how and preceptor experience was a blast!
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” - Eleanor Roosevelt -
I dreamt of being a Registered Nurse in Canada and now I am! To add, I am happily married to the angel of my life (no kids yet). That is why it’s Sherrylyn V-V which stands for Sherrylyn Vergara-Vivero. So to all of you nurses at heart that just started, or in the middle of the battles - don’t give up. Remember that people normally get discouraged when it is halfway along. Depression is at peak during the first months of the year – halfway to summer season.
Why people choose nursing as a career? Remember the joys and sacrifices when you were a student nurse and taking the nerve-wracking board exam. Nursing is indeed an extension of your love to others. It's more than a profession, mission and more of a vocation. I empower you to "fight for your family, fight for your dreams and be assertive no matter where you’re from or who you are".
“The meaning of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

I love to try new things – I enjoy challenges. I’ve always wanted to connect and inspire
all nurses at heart around the globe. I know that there is a way, especially in
this time of information age. I stumbled across SBI.
